You can set how long it needs to be inactive before it shuts down, but it’s a great way to conserve power.

  • Local Cooling app – This application works on Windows XP to better control how power is used by the operating system. This can actually help quite a bit with power consumption, which is good for the environment.

  • grano.la – This software will help you increase the energy efficiency of your computer. Most people report around a 30% decrease in power consumption. While this might not sound like a lot, it can really add up quickly.

According to the University of Washington, a lot of thought is going into making software of the future more energy efficient right out of the box. This is going to be good for future generations, but it’s still a good idea to check out some of the software listed above for ways to decrease your power usage today.
