Difference between Stainless Steel and Ordinary Steel

Before we talk about the differences between stainless steel and regular steel, let’s define what steel itself really is.  This means steel like you would get from steel supplies Brisbane and other places like that.  Steel is iron that has had nearly all of the impurities taken out.  It also has a consistent concentration of carbon throughout (0.5 to 1.5 percent).  Silica, sulfur, and phosphorous are considered impurities which weaken steel a great deal, so they need to be removed.  The big advantage steel has over iron is that it is far stronger.  Now here are some of the differences between stainless steel like you would get from steel supplies Brisbane and standard steel:

  1. Uses — Stainless, as metro steel would tell you, is a name used worldwide for multiple steels; all are different and are used for their anti-corrosive element. This steel was made especially to have the capability to withstand a large number of corrosive elements.  It helps buildings to last much longer than they would without using it.  It also keeps workplaces safe, is easy to clean and to keep clean which makes food preparation surfaces a lot simpler to keep germ free, thus making food healthier and safer for when we consume it.

Environmentally Friendly — Stainless steel is also an environmentally friendly, or “green” product, as it can be melted down, recycled and made into something entirely different once its original purpose is done. Disposing of unusable steel is becoming quite the problem nowadays, as we didn’t realize how much it mattered, but now that we do, we are left with trying to do something about it.
  2. Chromium — In a nutshell, stainless steel is always made with chromium. Not so with regular steel.  In fact, the minimum amount of chromium used in making stainless steel is 10.5%.  In case you didn’t know, it is the chromium that gives stainless steel its stainless properties.  It also greatly helps the corrosive resistance by creating a chromium oxide film on the steel.  This is a very thin layer, which can be self-repairing if used under the right conditions.
  3. Varied Properties — Other elements go into making stainless steel too, including nickel, nitrogen and something you’ve probably never heard of called molybdenum. When these particular elements are brought together it creates different crystal structures that give it a lot of properties for machining, welding and forming.
  4. Four Types — There are four major types of stainless steel. Regular steel can’t say that.  Austenitic is the most widely used type.  It has a nickel content of 7%, which makes it a very flexible material.  It is used in a long list of household products, industrial piping and vessels, architectural facades and constructional structures.

So to some things up, stainless steel is a very versatile material, basically like no other, thing metro steel would tell you.  Because of its durability and flexibility it can be used for years without the need to dispose of it, giving it a significantly longer lifespan than those composed of regular steel.  Not only are the maintenance costs lower, but this type of steel has a much higher scrap value than other types.
