Santiago, Chile

Santiago, Chile continues to grow in economy, its tourism sector is booming. The quake that occurred in 2011 damaged many of its older buildings, including the Museum of Arts. Today, Santiago has added modern museums, smartly designed hotels and sophisticated restaurants. The city continues to be more vibrant. Lollapalooza, the 20 year old music festival picked Santiago for its first overseas outing in 2011 due to its open space and the variety of cultural offerings, and also because locals have a passion for contemporary music.

The government has invested in the arts in the city as can be witnessed by the new Centro Gabriela Mistral, a 200,000-square-foot center made of glass and weathering steel, which hosts varied concerts, dance performances, plays and art exhibits. You will love the Museo de la Moda, a privately financed fashion museum located inside a revamped 1960’s Modernist mansion. It features a permanent collection of nearly 10, 000 pieces of couture and memorabilia.

San Juan Islands, Wash.

One striking thing that attracts you to San Juan Islands is it dining scene. You can take the reins at Willows Inn on the Lumini Island or the Allium on Orcas Island. But the eternal attraction of the San Juans that attracts both chefs and tourists as well are its landscapes. On the islands from Shaw to Decatur, pastoral hills give way to broody forests and scrappy escarpments that overlook fjordlike inlets. Areas are protected from unruly development by organizations like the San Juan County Land Bank that overseas active land preservation effort.

The San Juan Island National Historic Park has grown tremendously in recent years. For example, in 2010, 312 addition acres of the densely forested Mitchell Hill were purchased.

Koh Samui, Thailand

Koh Samui is Thailand’s third largest island located in the southern gulf of Thailand. What attracts visitors there are white sand beaches, abundant coral reefs and seas of palm trees.     I didn’t realize that Lollapalooza was in Santiago in 2011. That would have been an awesome show and city to go to! Buffalo, NY has a lot of history and was once one of the top cities in the United States to visit. With all of its positive changes lately, hopefully it will be again one day.
