I’ve seen a lot of technological innovations in my 50 years on planet Earth, and I sat down the other day and listed out as many of them as I could. That helped me put together this list of the 20 biggest tech innovations of my lifetime that I actually use on a daily basis. Some of these I use more than others, but I use them all at least once a month.

Top 20 Tech Innovations of Last 50+ Years

Here’s a look at 20 specific technology innovations of the last fifty years, plus or minus a few years.

  1. Remote Control – Got me lazy!

  2. Microwave Oven – Also made my life lazier!

  3. Birth Control Pill – This really shook up the world. While I don’t take them, they have affected my life in several ways.

  4. Jet Airliners – Commercial jets now make it possible to get from point A to point B a lot faster – and safer too.

  5. Industrial Robots – In the auto industry a lot of people lost their jobs as robots took over. I actually used these back when I worked for a car company.

  6. Cordless Tools – I don’t know where I would be without my cordless drill. This is one tech innovation that made a lot of men happy.

  7. LED Lights – From brighter lights to less energy consumption, LED lights have been very useful in my life.

  8. Video Games – I don’t play a lot of video games myself, but it’s one technological innovation that my grandsons really enjoy.

  9. High Yield Rice – This has helped a lot with making sure people around the world don’t go hungry.

  10. Smoke Detectors – It would be interesting to see how many lives this innovation has helped save over the years.

  11. Digital Music – The ability to digitize music into ones and zeros is something I’m thankful for every single day.

  12. Computer Mouse – Before the mouse, the GUI (graphical user interface) wasn’t really possible. Thanks to Xerox PARC, this innovation is widely used today.

  13. ATM – Getting money out of the bank used to be such a hassle, but automated teller machines are one tech innovation that made getting my money a lot easier.

  14. Cell Phones – The first ones were giant monsters, but they quickly went down in size – and price. I don’t know what I’d do without my Android phone.

  15. MRI – Magnetic resonance imaging technology has helped many people – including myself – by making it easier to see what’s going on inside the body.

  16. GPS – Global positioning satellites are very helpful to many different people. Thanks to satellites, this technology has come a long way over the years.

  17. MP3 – This file format made it a lot easier to carry around a large music collection and listen to it whenever and wherever.

  18. Drugs – Whether it’s Prozac or something else, a lot of technological innovations in medicine have helped a lot of people, including me.

  19. Electric Ignition – Starting a car has become a lot easier these days thanks to electronic ignition systems.

  20. Cloud Servers – Another great innovation is cloud computing, which I use on a daily basis.
